- Know Your "Why"
Before deciding on races or goals, get clear on why you want to achieve them. Your "why" will be your anchor when the training gets tough. Are you tackling an Ironman for personal growth, fitness, or something else? For example, if your goal is to lose weight or improve longevity, there might be better pursuits tailored to your needs. Define your motivation first—then align your goals.
- Reflect on Past Goals
Why haven’t you reached your goals yet? Or what has helped you succeed so far? If you’re aiming to be a top finisher while balancing family, career, and other priorities, it’s important to honestly assess what it will take to get there. Podiums are achievable, but they often require significant time, resources, and sacrifices.
This doesn’t mean you can’t pursue ambitious goals, but it does mean having open conversations—with yourself, loved ones, and your coach—about what’s realistic given your circumstances. Amateur racing is more competitive than ever, with some athletes dedicating professional-level resources to their pursuits. Reflect on the challenges you’ve faced, what’s realistic for your life right now, and what success looks like for you.
- Identify Adjustments
Progress requires change. Take a constructive (not overly critical) look at areas for improvement. Acknowledge what you’re not yet great at, but celebrate that you’re challenging yourself to grow. That alone is powerful.
- Set Realistic Expectations
Improvement requires balance. Ask yourself—and your loved ones—if you’re truly ready and able to make the changes you’re considering. Start small and build up. Unrealistic goals often lead to frustration and burnout, so set modifications that feel achievable. It is easy to add more from a base of consistency.
- Trust the Process
Growth often comes from stepping outside your comfort zone. Avoid jumping on every new trend or copying what others do—what works for them might not work for you. Be open to small, testable changes and evaluate their impact over time.
- BONUS! - Measure Progress
Define clear ways to track your progress. This keeps you motivated and reassured that your efforts are paying off. Whether it’s pacing, strength gains, or mindset improvements, measurable outcomes are key to staying on track.
